Dietitian
Suzanne Silverstein, MA, RD
From the Richmond District and currently employed as a Training and
Development Team Leader with the Virginia Department of Health in Richmond,
Suzi is the 48th recipient of VDA's most prestigious award. She received
her BS degree in Dietetics from Michigan State University, her MA in
Human Resource Management at George Washington University and her Supervised
Practice Experience at Medical College of Virginia. Prior to her current
position in which she is responsible for directing the Virginia Department
of Health Dietetic Internship, Suzi was employed at New Wellness, Hanover
Health Care, St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond Community Hospital and Carmine
Foods, all located in Richmond. Suzi has served the Association in many
capacities including RDA President and ADA Council on Practice member.
She is currently the Area VI Chairperson for the Dietetic Educators
Practice Group of the ADA.

Young Dietitians of the Year
Heather Cox, RD
From Southwest District, Heather is employed as a corporate RD with
Kroger Mid-Atlantic, Adjunct Professor at Virginia Tech and Hospice
Dietitian in Roanoke. She is a graduate of Virginia Tech and completed
the Aramark AP4 Dietetic Internship in Philadelphia. Heather is currently
completing the requirements to become a Certified Diabetes Educator.
She was the Media Committee Chair for the 2002 Annual Meeting and serves
as the Nominating Committee Chair for SVDA. She is committed to developing
the youth in our profession by also serving as a preceptor for dietetic
interns from Virginia Tech, Radford and the University of Delaware.
Lise Gloede, RD
From Northern District, Lise is the Therapeutic Outpatient Dietitian
at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. She dispenses MNT to all generations
from pediatrics through geriatrics and is responsible for the Center's
ADA-recognized Diabetes Self Management Education Program. Lise was
educated at James Madison University, completed an internship at Massachusetts
General in Boston and is currently pursuing a CDE credential. She is
a tenacious Vintage Virginia sales representative and a contributing
writer for the NDVDA newsletter. Lise is a preceptor for Virginia Tech
interns and volunteers with the Arlington County Free Clinic.
Carol Jones, RD
From the Blue Ridge District, Carol is the Clinical and Renal Dietitian
at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, Consultant Dietitian for
the Greenstone Residence in Waynesboro and owner of a small catering
and cake decorating business. She completed her BS degree and internship
at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC and is currently pursuing a Masters
degree at James Madison. Carol is the Vintage Virginia Marketing Chair
for her district and serves as the ADAF Representative and "creative
spark" to the Board of Directors. She is a member of the Virginia
Council on Renal Nutrition and the National Kidney Foundation.
Emerging
Dietetic Leader of the Year
Carol King, RD
From Southwest District, Carol is the Foodservice Manager and Nutritionist
at Total Action Against Poverty Head Start in Roanoke. She manages the
operation of the central kitchen which satellites food to 17 Child Development
centers in the area. Her kitchen is a training site for local foodservice
students and dietetic interns from Virginia Tech, Radford and the Virginia
Department of Health for whom Carol serves as a preceptor. She has volunteered
her time and expertise in many capacities with the SVDA including current
Newsletter Editor, Past President and Chairman of the Nominating Committee.

Educator Award
Patricia Brevard, PhD, RD, FADA
From the Blue Ridge District, Dr. Brevard is a professor of Nutrition
at James Madison University and the immediate Past President of the
Virginia Dietetic Association. This award was bestowed by the Area VI
Dietetic Educators of Practitioners DPG and honors an educator in a
didactic program that exemplifies excellence in teaching. This award
recognizes the efforts and expertise of the educator in preparing students
for roles in nutrition and dietetics, as well as the contribution made
in fostering the profession and serving as a role model for future professionals.
